Preparatory Meetings in Tel-Aviv

The Queeruption planning committee changed the time and the place for meetings. Send us an e-mail to check where we are this week q2006@queeruption.org. Meetings are in Hebrew and English and all are welcome.

You are invited to the 9th Queeruption in Tel-Aviv, August (3-13) 2006!

In the last Queeruption* in Barcelona there was a proposal by present Israeli queers to hold the next Queeruption in Tel-Aviv, which was welcomed by activists from the Middle East, Europe and North America. This initiative was rooted in our belief that as queers we view ourselves as part of the global struggle for freedom, justice and self determination.

Thousands of LGBT people are expected to attend the World Pride event in Jerusalem in August 2006. This event is also used as a chance for the Israeli office of foreign affairs to hide the government’s war crimes behind a rainbow flag. The slogan of the World Pride Parade is “Love Without Borders”. We believe that love without borders should reject occupation, apartheid, social injustice, ecological destruction and walls. There has been a global call to boycott the World Pride in Jerusalem by various Palestine solidarity groups as well. We feel that it is important to push our solidarity further by coming to Israel and Palestine for a celebration of our diversity, empowerment and resistance.

It is the first time that Queeruption takes place outside the borders of rich western states. This Queeruption will also extend beyond the centralized location in Tel-Aviv to the West Bank and spice up the World Pride parade in Jerusalem. There are also possibilities for people interested in staying longer to join solidarity work in the area which we will provide links to. A group will be in Tel-Aviv sometime before the event in order to help set things up.

Given the social and cultural situation there are a lot of issues to take into account and discuss during the preparation process and through the event. We need your help, whether you are coming or not, with raising funds and advertising the event. We also need your knowledge, skills and ideas, and your help on a ground preparation.

In order to do so and if you have any questions or comments please contact us by subscribing to the mailing list of the Queeruption. Send a mail to: majordomo@lists.queeruption.org with the words: subscribe queeruption9tel-aviv in the body of the message.

* Queeruption is a do-it-yourself, anti-commercial, non-hierarchal, safe and open space for workshops, music, art, actions, parties, sex, performances and everything you propose and/or prepare. Queeruption welcomes and celebrates all gender identities and sexualities, with no toleration to sexism, macho behavior, racism, heterophobia, lesbophobia, homophobia, transphobia, discrimination based on different abilities or ages, and any form of aggression.

What to bring with you to Queeruption Tel-Aviv?

  • A sleeping bag or a sheet (nowdays it's 20' c./ 70' f. at nights and 30' c./ 85' f. in the day time…the humidity now in Tel-Aviv is 60%. in August it can be higher…)
  • A sleeping mat (there are spaces to sleep, but we won't be able to find mattresses for everyone, especially in the 3 days in nature)
  • A glass and a plate (there will be 3 vegan meals a day)
  • A bathing suit and a towel (our venue is a 10-15 minutes walk from the beach!)
  • A hat and a sunblock of SPF 15 and higher (it's going to be sweaty…)
  • Mosquito Repellant (some of the sleeping spaces are on a roof, under the sky…)
  • Movies that you made/like (we will have screening room) and music you want to put in the parties
  • Ideas/materials for workshops/actions/performances/art you want to have in the Queeruption, and any materials from your own community that you want to share with others…
  • You don't have to bring money to the 11 days of the Queeruption unless you want to buy alcohol, juice and other stuff. You don't have to pay for the food, sleeping spaces, parties, workshops and the transportation to Jerusalem, West Bank and the nature camp. Still, It will be nice to bring some money as a donation.
  • About spending money before and after the Queeruption: you can find cheap accommodation, food and travel for 150$ for a week in Palestine and 250$ for a week in Israel. it will be also possible to stay for free in some spaces in Tel-Aviv before and after the Queeruption, so don't worry.
  • love and rage!

FAQs

– To subscribe to the mailing list (details about how to do it – on the right side of the page). This will give you the actual relevant information and will give us idea about how many people to expect.

– To read the FAQs on this website. Especially the part about “What kind of problems can I face entering the country?”. It's also available in French and Spanish.

Where to come when you arrive to Israel?

If you come before the 30th of July – We have a place for people in the roof of the apartment in 32 Sheinkin st.

The queeruption cellphone is: 052-3725519(From abroad: 972-52-725519).

Call us after you arrive to Israel, you can use a public phone with a Telecard (a card with an amount of money on it to use in public phones) that you can buy in every shop. there are not a lot of public phones in Israel that take money, so it's better to buy this telecard.

if you are being detained in the entrance for more then just two or three hours you should have the right to make a free phone call. call us and we will see how can we help.

After you arrive to Ben-Gurion Airport (and if you don't arrive from Ben-Gurion please email us for different information) you should take the train to "tel aviv merkaz (center)". the train works from 3:53am til 23:23pm and it leaves the air-port to tel-aviv every 20-40 minutes. you will have only 10 minutes on the train so enjoy it.

from tel-aviv merkaz take the bus no. 5 or 18 to the city center. ask the bus driver what is the closest bus stop to Sheinkin st.

if you take line 18 you should get of in the first stop on Allenby st. and walk in the in the same direction that the bus continued on till you'll see to your left sheinkin st.

if you take no. 5 you should get off on Rotshild Blvd. next to Sheinkin st. and then turn into sheinkin st.

if you prefer not to use buses, you should take the train to "tel aviv hagana" station and from there walk to Levinski st. in the direction of the central bus station and go to the left on David Zemach st. , there will be service taxis (a small bus with 10 sits) over there and you should take line 4 ("kav arba" in hebrew) and ask to go down on sheinkin.

for more info about the time of the train go to:

http://www.israrail.org.il/english

for more info about the time of the buses in tel-aviv go to:

http://www.dan.co.il/english/

in case there is no train, at nights (23:23pm-3:53am), on friday evening (from 15:00) and saturday (till 21:00), you can take a private taxi from the airport to tel-aviv. if you find other people to join you to the taxi it should be cheaper. these are service taxis that take you were you need in tel aviv, you just need to give them the address of the house and they should take you there.

in case you are three or four people you can also take a private taxi from the airport, it might cost a bit less then the service taxis.

it is not impossible to try and hitchhiking (lifting, thumbing, hitching or tramping) from the airport. Just look around and ask people if they are going in the direction of tel aviv with a car.
